What we found: Pressure testing confirmed a leak in the hot water supply system. Acoustic listening placed the leak near the utility room wall, and thermal imaging showed a warm temperature anomaly approximately 4 feet from the utility room exterior wall, consistent with a hot water supply line below the slab. Probing confirmed the anomaly was in the slab, not at a surface fixture. The home, built in 1968, has copper supply lines embedded in the slab throughout — the construction standard of the era in East Bench Bountiful.

Repair decision: We presented two options: (1) spot repair — open the slab at the leak point and repair the pipe at that location ($950–$1,100), or (2) pipe rerouting — abandon the slab-embedded section of the affected hot water supply line and route new PEX through the attic to the utility room and kitchen ($1,350–$1,550). Given the home's age and the systemic corrosion risk on all embedded copper in a 1968 slab, the homeowner chose rerouting. A spot repair on a corroding 58-year-old embedded copper system is high likelihood to leak again at another point within 3–5 years.

What we did: Abandoned the slab-embedded hot water supply line to the kitchen and utility room. Ran new 3/4-inch PEX through the attic — through the interior wall cavity to the kitchen — and reconnected at the fixtures above the slab.
